Kicking and Screening Lineup for Austin, Texas

New York, NY, and Austin, TX (August 13, 2013)

For the first time since 2010, the Kicking and Screening Soccer Film Festival is returning to Texas.

On September 7th and 8th, K+S and the UT Austin Sport Development Lab will present a two-day festival of films, panel discussions, and parties in the state capital, Austin.

“Austin has always been one of the coolest cities in America, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that they are mad for soccer,” said K+S cofounder and director Greg Lalas. “We’re thrilled to bring a festival to such a cool place. And, yes, we’re fully prepared and excited for any weirdness that might occur.”

Austin’s unofficial motto, “Keep Austin Weird,” provides the thematic foundation for K+S AUSTIN 2013’s opening night. With the screening of Mat Hodgson’s Four Year Plan, the focus is on the evolution of “modern football” from the people’s sport into a global industry, raising questions about the evolving “spirit of the game, the role of the supporter, and the “right way” to grow the game.

The second night delves in the beautiful game’s impact on conflict resolution, with the screening of Alexander and Chris Browne’s After the Cup: Sons of Sakhnin United. This remarkable story of the first team from an Arab town to win the Israeli Cup and represent Israel in European competition.

“The Sport Development Lab cannot be more excited about Kicking + Screening coming to the University of Texas,” said Brian Gonzales, lecturer and director of programs at the UT Austin Sport Development Lab. “It is a perfect blend of sport, the arts, and community spirit, and I am certain the festival will appeal to our diverse student body and the kaleidoscope of culture that is Austin, Texas. From our faculty and students here in Sport Management to our ever-expanding local soccer community, there is a growing buzz about this soccer film festival thing.’ It is certainly a unique concept and one that we are delighted to host. Welcome, y’all.”
