America SCORES partners with urban schools to provide a high quality, team-based program that integrates soccer, poetry and service-learning. Their innovative approach improves students’ health, academic achievement and civic engagement.
America SCORES works to inspire urban youth to lead healthy lives, be engaged students, and have the confidence and character to make a difference in the world.
America SCORES core values involve teaching youth teamwork, leadership and commitment.
Where they work:
America SCORES has projects in 15 affiliate cities (Atlanta, Bay Area, Chicago, Cleveland, DC, Dallas, Denver, LA, Milwaukee, New York, New England, Seattle, St. Louis. Portland & Phoenix are two sites in development) working with more than 7,500 youth and 500 public school teachers in nearly 200 urban elementary and middle schools.
What they do:
The America SCORES program has a three-part approach to help children experience success on the field, in the classroom and in the community:
* Create teams through the sport of soccer.
* Bring these teams into the classroom to discover their voice through poetry.
* As a team, the poet-athletes learn to use their voices to make change in their communities.
Soccer is a universal sport accessible to all children regardless of background and physical characteristics. It is an inclusive sport that fulfills an important need in urban schools which often lack in high quality organized sport and after-school activities. Students who play soccer benefit from increased aerobic capacity and physical fitness, as well as lessons in sportsmanship, discipline, problem solving and teamwork.
How to get involved:
* There are a number of different ways that you can donate your time and abilities to the America SCORES program.
